Sudden changes to CIHR funding threaten research on Indigenous children's health

There’s a new controversy raging in Canada’s scientific community as word spreads about impending changes to the country’s major health science research organization. In what has been called a "rebellion," emails are flying as scientists share news about a recent decision by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Governing Council. They say it will force scientists to shop around for matching external funds before they can access public money that used to be granted with no strings attached.

6th International Meeting on Indigenous Child Health in Ottawa

The International Meeting on Indigenous Child Health (IMICH), held every two years, focuses on innovative clinical care models and community-based public health approaches for children and youth in First Nations, Inuit, Métis, American Indian, Alaska Native and other Indigenous communities around the world.

Co-hosted by the Canadian Paediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics, this meeting brings together health care providers and researchers working with children, youth and families in American Indian, Alaska Native, First Nations, Inuit, Métis and other Indigenous communities. Participants share model programs and research, learn about prevalent health problems, and acquire practical skills for use in community settings. Opportunities to share knowledge and support one another’s efforts, to network and develop partnerships are built into the program.

Opportunities for Healthy Living in Southwestern Ontario is now available in digital format online

Children’s health atlas for Southwestern Ontario called “Opportunities for Healthy Living in Southwestern Ontario: A focus on Children's Environments” is now available in digital format online, and is free to download.

The atlas contains nearly 400 maps in total, including useful maps on the People, Places, and Patterns for every county and primary city within each county within Southwestern Ontario!  The atlas also includes informative text on the background, justification and methodology for the creating the atlas.

Métis youth benefits from MNO programming

Jessica Boulard is yet another example of a young Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) citizen who has benefited from MNO’s education and training programs.
A recipient of the MNO bursary and participant of the MNO Summer Career Program, Boulard is very grateful for the assistance the MNO has provided her which she believes allowed her to obtain and achieve her educational goals.

Wiky chief, council pass Children’s Bill of Rights

WIKWEMIKONG—In an historical event for the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, chief and council came together before the youth of the community to publicly declare a change in the direction of its mandate and sign the newly developed Children’s Bill of Rights.
